Fleece and midlayers

A fleece is the most versatile layer in outdoor clothing. It keeps warmth in, dries quickly and can be worn under a shell or on its own. Patagonia names its fleeces: Synchilla is a soft, thick fleece, the Snap-T is a Synchilla pullover with a snap placket, and Micro D is thinner and lighter. Quarter-zip fleeces and jumpers are worn the same way.

Shells and softshells

A shell keeps out wind and rain with a waterproof, breathable membrane and taped seams. Arc'teryx groups its shells in families such as Beta and Alpha, and The North Face uses the names HyVent and Summit Series. A softshell blocks wind and light rain and lets more air through, which makes it comfortable when moving.

Down and puffer jackets

A puffer jacket is filled with down or synthetic insulation in stitched chambers. The Nuptse from The North Face, with its wide horizontal baffles, is one of the best-known examples. Down is warmer for its weight, while synthetic insulation keeps most of its warmth when damp.

Size and measurements
