Rain jackets and shells

Marmot is an American outdoor brand. The PreCip is a lightweight rain jacket made with Marmot's own waterproof, breathable fabric rather than Gore-Tex, with taped seams, zips under the arms and a hood that rolls into the collar. Marmot also makes shells with a Gore-Tex membrane, and the Gore-Tex label on the jacket shows which fabric is used.

Softshells and windbreakers

A softshell is made of a stretch fabric that blocks wind and light rain and breathes more easily than a waterproof shell. A windbreaker is lighter still and is made for wind rather than rain.

Size and measurements

Outdoor jackets are cut with room for a layer underneath, so the letter on the label is a rough guide. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
