The house of Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent founded his fashion house in Paris in 1961 with Pierre Bergé. The YSL monogram, with the three letters interlaced, was designed by the artist Cassandre in the early years of the house. In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent opened Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, a ready-to-wear boutique, at a time when the large Paris houses still worked mainly in couture. Through the 1970s and 1980s the name was also licensed for a wide range of products.
Yves Saint Laurent or Saint Laurent
In 2012 the ready-to-wear line was renamed Saint Laurent, and the YSL monogram stayed in use on accessories. A label that reads Yves Saint Laurent therefore points to an item from before that change, and newer clothing has the name Saint Laurent.
YSL jumpers and cardigans
A YSL jumper is usually a classic shape, a crewneck, a V-neck or a turtleneck, in wool, a wool blend or cotton, often with a small YSL logo embroidered on the chest. The crewneck works on its own or over a T-shirt, the V-neck shows the collar of a shirt underneath and the turtleneck has a tall, folded collar that covers the neck. The button cardigan opens down the front and is worn over a shirt or a T-shirt.
Size and measurements
Knitwear relaxes through the body with wear, and cuts differ between production years, so the size on the label is a rough guide. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
More designer labels are on the page for high-end designer clothing, including Christian Dior and Prada, and knitwear from all brands is on the jumpers and knitwear page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Yves Saint Laurent the same as Saint Laurent?
It is the same house. The ready-to-wear line was renamed Saint Laurent in 2012, and the YSL monogram is still used on accessories.
How should a wool jumper be washed?
A wool jumper is washed by hand in cold water with a wool detergent, or on the wool cycle of a machine, and dried flat on a towel, because a wet jumper on a hanger stretches under its own weight.
Which materials are used?
Yves Saint Laurent knitwear is made in wool, wool blends, cotton and synthetic blends. The material of each item is stated in its description, as it appears on the care label.
