Knitwear is at the heart of a classic women's wardrobe. Ralph Lauren makes cable-knit jumpers, crewnecks, V-necks and quarter-zips, mostly in cotton or wool, and Lacoste adds jumpers and button cardigans with the crocodile logo. Size and measurements

Many classic items are cut unisex or come from men's ranges, so the measurements are a better guide than the letter on the label. Each item is measured at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve. What is a cable knit?

A cable knit has raised, twisted patterns that run down the front and the sleeves, made by crossing stitches over one another. The pattern adds texture and makes the knit thicker than a plain jumper.

How should a wool or cotton jumper be washed?

The care label inside the item gives the instructions for that item. Wool is best dried flat, and tumble drying is the biggest single cause of shrinkage in cotton. More is in the guide to washing and caring for clothing.
