Shirts, knitwear and jackets

Classic menswear is built on a few garments that combine easily. An oxford button-down shirt goes under a crewneck, V-neck or quarter-zip jumper, and a polo shirt takes the place of the shirt in summer. Ralph Lauren makes all of these with the polo player embroidered on the chest, and Lacoste adds polo shirts and jumpers with the crocodile logo. Barbour waxed cotton jackets, such as the Bedale and the Beaufort, and Ralph Lauren Harrington jackets complete the outerwear.

Size and measurements

Cuts differ from brand to brand, so the letter on the label is a rough guide. Each item is measured at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
