What is deadstock clothing?

Deadstock means clothing that was never sold or worn. What the term covers, how it differs from Excellent condition and the four condition labels used for every item.

Deadstock means clothing that was never sold or worn. It is surplus stock that stayed in a warehouse or stockroom, sometimes for years, and still has no wear.

The term is used often in pre-owned fashion, and not always accurately. Knowing what it means makes clear what a Deadstock label promises.

What deadstock means

Deadstock refers to clothing that was never sold or worn. It was kept in a warehouse, a store stockroom or a shipping container, sometimes for years, and was never worn by a customer. Tags may still be attached. The garment may have aged in storage, but it has no wear.

An item in Excellent condition is different: it was worn, but carefully, and shows no visible signs of it. Both can look unworn. Only a Deadstock item has never been worn.

Why the distinction matters

Deadstock is rarer by definition, since unworn stock of a specific item in a specific size is not replenished. That scarcity is part of the value. A worn item that is labelled Deadstock to justify a higher price does not match what the label promises.

How condition is graded at leverene

Every item has one of four condition labels, so the condition is stated clearly before checkout.

  • Deadstock. Never worn. Unsold surplus stock, still in new condition.
  • Excellent. Excellent condition with no stains, holes, damage or missing parts. Any minor imperfections would be detailed in the description.
  • Good. Gently worn with minor imperfections, fully detailed in the description.
  • Fair. Significant wear present. All imperfections are detailed in the description.

The condition label appears on every product page, with a short explanation next to it.

Deadstock and authenticity

Deadstock items go through the same process as every other item. Each item is inspected, authenticated, cleaned and measured before it is added to the store. Each step is described in How leverene works.

Prices

Prices are set per item, up to 80% below the original retail price.

Where to find deadstock at leverene

Deadstock items appear throughout the collections instead of in one dedicated section, since availability depends on the items sourced. The condition label on each product page states whether a specific item qualifies. The Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Stone Island collections, for men and women, are a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Deadstock item always have its original tags?

Deadstock items often still have their original tags, though not always, depending on how they were stored.

Does deadstock refer to a specific decade?

Deadstock describes wear history, which is none, and does not indicate age. A Deadstock item can be older or more recent.

Is deadstock the same as new?

A Deadstock item has never been worn, but it may have aged in storage. That is why its condition is checked like that of every other item.

Why is Deadstock sometimes priced higher than Excellent?

Unworn stock is harder to find than a carefully worn item of the same model, and that scarcity can show in the price.
