How to spot fake Canada Goose: seven checks
A genuine Canada Goose is recognised by details that agree with each other. Seven checks on the hologram label, the Arctic disc, the hardware, the fur trim, the down fill, the labels and the construction.
In this guide
A genuine Canada Goose is recognised by details that agree with each other: the hologram label, the Arctic disc on the sleeve, the zips and snaps, the fur trim on older parkas, the down fill, the labels and the way the item is sewn. No single check is decisive, so the seven checks below are read together.
The checks apply to parkas, jackets and vests alike. Where a check matters more for one type of item, that is stated in the section.
1. The hologram label
Since autumn 2017, Canada Goose has sewn a hologram label into every product as proof of authenticity. The hologram shows a polar bear and has elements that only appear when the label is viewed from different angles. On a genuine label the image is sharp and changes as the label is tilted. A flat, printed image that looks the same from every angle does not match.
An item made before 2017 has no hologram label of this kind, so a missing hologram is only a warning sign on an item that is recent by its model and its labels.
2. The Arctic disc on the sleeve
The round badge on the upper arm is the Arctic disc, with the words Canada Goose Arctic Program around the edge. Canada Goose itself names three things that give a counterfeit away: poor embroidery, colour variations in the stitching and errors in the shapes of the maple leaves inside the disc. On a genuine disc the embroidery is dense, the lettering is evenly spaced and the disc is stitched to the sleeve with a neat, even seam. Black Label items carry a monochrome version of the disc, which is not a sign of a fake.
3. Zips, snaps and toggles
The hardware is checked piece by piece. Zips should run smoothly and feel solid, and the branding on zip pulls, snaps and toggles should be consistent across the item. Light, rattling hardware or a zip that catches on a new-looking item is a reason to look closer.
4. The fur trim on older parkas
Canada Goose used coyote fur on its hoods from its early years until it stopped manufacturing with fur at the end of 2022. An older parka can therefore have a real fur ruff, while a parka made from 2023 onwards does not. Real fur has guide hairs of different lengths and a varied texture at the root, while synthetic fur usually looks even and slightly shiny. The description of the item states whether the fur trim is original, replaced or removed.
5. The down fill and the baffles
Gently squeezing a sleeve or a panel shows how the down is distributed. In a genuine parka the fill feels even within each baffle, the stitched channels that hold the down in place, without hard clumps or empty sections. Feathers that push through the shell in large numbers are a reason to look closer.
6. The labels inside
The labels inside should be printed sharply in a consistent font and sewn in neatly. The model name on the label has to belong to an actual Canada Goose model, and it should match the cut of the item: an Expedition is a long parka with a large hood, a Chilliwack is a bomber. How the models differ is set out in Canada Goose models compared.
7. Construction and finishing
The inside shows the quality of the construction. Seams should be clean and reinforced at the points that take the most strain, such as the underarms, the pocket openings and the base of the zip. Loose threads, uneven stitching and puckered seams are reasons to look closer.
What to check first by type of item
| Item | Check first | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Parka | Hologram label and Arctic disc | Fur trim, hood construction and down fill |
| Bomber or jacket | Arctic disc and zips | Model name on the label against the cut |
| Vest | Hologram label and labels inside | Even down fill in each baffle |
How old is a Canada Goose item?
Two dividing lines help to place an item in time. A hologram label with the polar bear means the item was made in or after autumn 2017. A real coyote fur ruff that came with the parka means it was made before the end of 2022. The model name and the style of the labels narrow it down further.
The checks together
The seven checks work as a whole. An item where the hologram, the disc, the hardware, the labels and the construction all agree with each other and with the model is consistent with a genuine item, and an item where one of them does not fit needs a closer look.
How items are authenticated at leverene
Every Canada Goose item at leverene is authenticated through LegitApp before it is added to the store. The cleaning, measuring and final check are described in How leverene works.
LegitApp works with resale businesses to verify branded clothing, and its authentication covers the details described above. The Canada Goose guide explains the history and the models in more detail. Canada Goose items can be browsed by type, such as parkas, for men and women, or on the Canada Goose page. The same approach for another brand is set out in how to spot fake Stone Island.
Frequently asked questions
Is the hologram label enough to tell if a Canada Goose is real?
The hologram is one signal, and it only exists on items made from autumn 2017. It is checked together with the Arctic disc, the hardware, the labels, the down fill and the construction.
Can a genuine Canada Goose parka have no fur?
Many genuine parkas have no fur. Canada Goose stopped manufacturing with fur at the end of 2022, and some older models were also sold without a fur trim.
Why does a Black Label disc look different?
Black Label items carry a monochrome version of the Arctic disc. The other checks apply in the same way.
Can items be returned?
Items can be returned within 30 days.
