Ralph Lauren knitwear
Ralph Lauren started in 1967 with a range of ties sold under the name Polo and added a full menswear collection in 1968. The embroidered polo player, the logo on the chest of most jumpers, first appeared in 1971 on the cuff of a women's shirt. On a jumper it is usually small and stitched in a contrasting or tonal thread. Ralph Lauren knits its jumpers in cotton, wool, merino and wool blends, and the label inside names the line, such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Polo Sport or Lauren Ralph Lauren.
The quarter-zip jumper
The quarter-zip has a short zip that runs from the collar to the upper chest. Closed, the ribbed collar stands up around the neck, and open, it folds down on both sides. The cuffs and hem are ribbed, and the polo player sits on the chest. A half-zip has a longer zip that runs further down the front, and a full-zip opens all the way like a cardigan. Over an Oxford shirt, the collar of the shirt sits inside the open zip collar.
The cable knit jumper
A cable knit has twisted columns of stitches, the cables, running down the front, the back and usually the sleeves. Ralph Lauren makes the cable knit in cotton and in wool, with a crewneck or a V-neck, ribbed cuffs and hem and the polo player on the chest. The twisted stitches make the knit thicker than a plain jumper of the same yarn. Cable knit jumpers have their own page: Ralph Lauren cable knit jumpers.
Polo Bear and flag jumpers
The Polo Bear first appeared in 1991 and has been knitted onto Polo jumpers since the early 1990s, dressed in a different outfit over the years. The flag jumper has an American flag knitted into the front. On both, the motif is knitted into the jumper rather than printed on it, so it is part of the fabric and does not crack or peel.
Crewneck, V-neck and turtleneck
The crewneck has a round, ribbed neckline that sits close to the base of the neck and works on its own or over a T-shirt. The V-neck shows the collar of a shirt underneath, and the turtleneck has a tall, folded collar that covers the neck. Sleeveless jumpers are worn over a shirt in the same way as a V-neck.

Size and measurements
Ralph Lauren cuts differ between lines and production years, and a knit relaxes through the body with wear, so the letter on the label is a rough guide.
The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
The same jumpers can be browsed for men and women, and the full range is on the Ralph Lauren page, with separate pages for hoodies, polo shirts and shirts. The Ralph Lauren guide explains the lines and the labels.
Frequently asked questions
How can a genuine Ralph Lauren jumper be recognised?
On a genuine jumper the polo player is densely embroidered, with the rider, the mallet and the horse clearly separated, and the neck label and care label match the line and the fibre of the knit. The seven checks are set out in spotting fake Ralph Lauren. Every item is authenticated through LegitApp.
What is the difference between a quarter-zip and a half-zip?
The length of the zip. A quarter-zip opens from the collar to the upper chest, and a half-zip opens further down the front.
Can a Ralph Lauren jumper go in the tumble dryer?
The care label inside the jumper gives the instructions for that jumper. Tumble drying is the biggest single cause of shrinkage in cotton, and a wool jumper is dried flat on a towel, because a wet jumper on a hanger stretches under its own weight. More is in the guide to washing and caring for clothing.
How do Ralph Lauren jumpers fit?
The cut depends on the line and the year, so two jumpers in the same size can measure differently. The four measurements in the description are a better guide than the letter on the label.
Is Polo Ralph Lauren the same as Ralph Lauren?
Polo Ralph Lauren is the main line of Ralph Lauren Corporation, the company that was called Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation until 2011. The other lines, such as Lauren Ralph Lauren and Purple Label, are explained in the Ralph Lauren guide.
