Shells and rain jackets
A shell is a jacket without insulation that keeps out wind and rain. The shells from The North Face are made in nylon or polyester, with a hood or a stand collar and a full zip, and rain jackets often have a storm flap over the zip and adjustable cuffs. HyVent is the name The North Face uses for its own waterproof, breathable fabrics. Summit Series is its most technical line. In cold weather a shell is worn over a fleece or a down jacket.
Softshells and windbreakers
A softshell is made of a stretch fabric that blocks wind and light rain and lets more air through than a waterproof shell, which makes it comfortable when moving.
