Stone Island sizes differ by period and by type of item, so the size on the label is a weak guide. This guide explains how to choose a Stone Island item by its measurements instead.
Size labels and recorded measurements
Every item at leverene is measured flat at four points: chest from armpit to armpit, shoulders, length and sleeve. With raglan sleeves there is no shoulder seam, so there are three measurements instead of four. Items shown on a model state the model's height and usual size instead of the four measurements.
Three things make a size label an unreliable guide.
The items come from different periods. A cut from one period was designed for a different silhouette than a cut from another. Both are correct for their moment. How the badge and the article number date an item is explained in how to date Stone Island.
Outerwear and knitwear are sized on different logic. A shell is cut to go over a jumper. A crewneck is cut to go under a shell. Both can carry the same letter.
Wool moves. A jumper stored on a hanger relaxes at the shoulder. One washed warm has shrunk. Neither measures what it did when it left the factory, which is why every item is measured flat instead of relying on the label.
How to buy by measurement
- Measure an item that is already owned and worn often. Lay it flat, pull it smooth without stretching and measure armpit seam to armpit seam. That single number is the reference.
- Decide what the item is for. Worn over a jumper, it needs roughly 5 to 8 cm more than the reference. Worn against a shirt, it should match the reference.
- Check the length as well. It is recorded from the highest point of the shoulder down.
- Ignore the letter. It shows what the label said and not what the garment measures.
