Pre-owned Carhartt chore coats, canvas work jackets with a corduroy collar and patch pockets.
The chore coat
The chore coat is a canvas work jacket with a corduroy collar and patch pockets at the front. Most close with buttons, and some have a zip or a snap and zip front. The lining depends on the coat and can be blanket, sherpa or quilted. Faded canvas and other marks of earlier use are stated in the condition description of each coat.
Size and measurements
Carhartt cut its work jackets generously through the chest, so the letter on the label is a rough guide. Each coat is measured at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
Other work jackets are on the Carhartt jackets page, with separate pages for Detroit jackets and Active jackets. Carhartt WIP makes its own chore coat, on the Carhartt WIP jackets page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a chore coat and a Detroit jacket?
Both have a corduroy collar. The chore coat has patch pockets and mostly a button front, while the Detroit jacket has a zip front, angled welt pockets and adjustable tabs at the waist.
How can the age of a chore coat be told?
The tags give the best indication: the style code, a Made in USA statement and, on older coats, a union label.
