Pre-owned Burberry for women and men, from trench coats and car coats to Harrington jackets, quilted jackets and knitwear.

Burberry coats

The Burberry trench coat is the coat the brand is known for, double-breasted with epaulettes and a belt on the classic version or single-breasted with concealed buttons. The car coat is shorter, single-breasted and without a belt, and the duffle coat is a hooded wool coat that closes with toggles. Overcoats are long tailored coats, usually in wool, made to be worn over a jacket or knitwear.

Burberry jackets

The jackets are shorter and lighter than the coats. The Harrington jacket has a zip front, a short body and slanted pockets, and the quilted jacket is stitched in a diamond pattern and often has a corduroy collar. On many Burberry jackets the check lining shows at the collar when it is turned up.

Burberry knitwear

Burberry jumpers come as crewnecks, V-necks and zip styles, usually in wool or cotton, and cardigans close with buttons or a zip. Both work as a layer under a coat or over a shirt, and some have the Equestrian Knight, the logo Burberry selected through a public competition around 1901.

How Burberry sizing works

Women's and men's Burberry run on different size scales, and a size label from decades ago rarely matches a modern one. Comparing the four measurements with an item already in the wardrobe gives the most reliable result. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.

Where Burberry comes from

Thomas Burberry opened his first store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856 and introduced gabardine in 1879, a tightly woven cloth that keeps out rain while letting air through. During the First World War Burberry developed the trench coat for British officers, and the Burberry check followed in the 1920s, first as the lining of the trench coat. In 1999 the company changed its name from Burberrys to Burberry, which is why the s on a label is the first indication of age.

The complete guide to Burberry covers the history, the labels and the sizing in more detail, and Spotting fake Burberry explains what to look for on the label and the hardware. Burberry is also available for women and for men.
