Burberry trench coats for women and men, from the belted double-breasted coat to the single-breasted version with concealed buttons.

Double-breasted and single-breasted

The double-breasted Burberry trench coat is the original military design. It has an overlapping front, a storm flap at the chest, epaulettes, a belt and buckled straps at the cuffs, and some versions have a throat latch at the collar. The single-breasted version closes with one row of buttons, often concealed, and wears more like a raincoat or mac. Replaced or missing buttons and damage to the belt are stated in the condition description of the item and shown in the photos.

Sizing and length for women and men

Women's and men's trench coats run on different size scales, and a size label from decades ago rarely matches a modern one. Length varies the most, from mid-length coats to long coats. A trench coat is cut to be worn over a jacket, so comparing the four measurements with a coat already in the wardrobe gives the most reliable result. The method is explained in the guide to measuring pit to pit.

Where the Burberry trench coat comes from

Thomas Burberry introduced gabardine in 1879, a tightly woven cloth that keeps out rain while letting air through. During the First World War Burberry developed the trench coat on that cloth for British officers, and the belt and the epaulettes date from that period. The Burberry check followed in the 1920s, first as the lining of the trench coat.

The complete guide to Burberry covers the history and the check in more detail, and Spotting fake Burberry explains what to look for on the label and the hardware. All Burberry jackets are collected in one page, and Burberry is also available for women and for men.

Questions about Burberry trench coats

Can a Burberry trench coat be worn in the rain?

Gabardine is woven tightly enough to keep out rain while letting air through. On an older coat, years of wear and cleaning reduce that protection.

How does Burberry sizing work?

Women's and men's coats run on different size scales, and older labels rarely match modern sizes. Each coat is measured flat at four points, so the measurements can be compared with a coat already in the wardrobe.

What is the Burberry pattern called?

It is the Burberry check. Burberry introduced it in the 1920s as the lining of the trench coat.

How can the age of a Burberry trench coat be told?

The label gives a first indication. It reads Burberrys on coats made before 1999 and Burberry after that.

How are the trench coats authenticated?

Every coat is authenticated through LegitApp.

How are prices set?

Prices are set per item, up to 80% below the original retail price.
