Bomber and Harrington jackets

The bomber jacket is a short jacket with a zip front and ribbed cuffs and hem, a style that started as a flight jacket for military pilots. The Harrington jacket is a lightweight jacket that ends at the waist, with a stand collar that closes with buttons, a zip front, a ribbed hem and cuffs and often a checked lining. Work jackets

Work jackets are made of heavy cotton such as duck canvas or denim, with reinforced seams and metal zips or buttons. Puffers, shell jackets and vests

A puffer jacket is quilted and filled with down or synthetic insulation, which holds warm air between the layers. Shell jackets and windbreakers are thin outer layers that keep out wind and, depending on the fabric, rain. A vest, also called a gilet or a bodywarmer, keeps the body warm while leaving the arms free, and comes in down, fleece and quilted versions. Size and measurements

Jackets are cut to be worn over other layers, and the cut differs per brand and per period, so the letter on the label is a rough guide. Each jacket is measured at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve.
