The brand

John Barbour started the business in South Shields in 1894, selling oilskins to the men working the docks and the boats on the Tyne. The Bedale dates from 1980 and the Beaufort from 1983, both designed by Dame Margaret Barbour.

Most jackets in the collection are waxed cotton with a corduroy collar, a tartan lining, a snap-button front and flap pockets. Several descriptions name the Bedale or the Beaufort. The collection also holds field jackets, a quilted jacket, a quilted vest and a wool overcoat.
