Stone Island and its fabrics

Stone Island was founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti as an offshoot of C.P. Company, the label he had started in 1971 under the name Chester Perry. From the start the brand concentrated on fabric research: nylon metal, Tela Stella, resin-coated fabrics and garment dyeing, in which a finished item is dyed only after it is sewn. That process gives each item its own uneven depth of colour.

Jackets and outerwear

The jackets are technical in build. Several are lightweight shells in crinkled nylon or Micro Reps with a stand collar and a full zip, and others are hooded jackets with a fleece lining, quilted puffer jackets and a padded jacket in coated cotton. The outerwear also includes a puffer vest and a jacket in heavyweight knit.

Knitwear and sweatshirts

Knitwear forms the largest group. Most items are crewneck sweaters in wool, cotton or a wool-nylon blend, from fine-gauge knit to textured medium-gauge knit, with ribbed collars, cuffs and hems. The collection also holds V-neck sweaters, turtlenecks, cardigans, a knit polo, quarter-zip tops and hoodies in cotton or fleece-like knit. On many items the compass badge on the left sleeve is removable and fastened with buttons.

Size and measurements

The cut of Stone Island varies by era and model: older items run boxier and recent production is slimmer, so the size on the label is only a rough guide. Each item is measured flat at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve.
