The Complete Guide to Stone Island
The fabrics, the badge, the season codes and how to recognise an authentic item. A guide to buying pre-owned Stone Island.
In this guide
Stone Island built its identity on fabric, from garment dyeing to coated nylons and reflective and thermosensitive cloth. The compass badge on the sleeve is shorthand for that research.
This guide covers what matters when buying pre-owned Stone Island: the history, how to read the badge and the internal labels, how the fabrics behave, how the items are cut and how to place a garment in time. The chapters can be read in order or used to jump to a specific topic.
A short history
Stone Island was founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti, as an offshoot of C.P. Company, the label he had started in 1971 under the name Chester Perry. The two share a design lineage and are 11 years apart, and the fabric research that defines Stone Island began at the older label.
From the start it was a laboratory for cloth: nylon metal, Tela Stella, resin-coated fabrics, and the garment-dyeing process where a finished item is dyed only after it is sewn. That method gives each garment its own uneven depth of colour, with subtly different tones at the seams and hems.
Spotting the real thing
Several details are checked together when judging whether a Stone Island item is authentic.
- Badge stitching. The badge is attached with tight, even stitching and a consistent stitch count. Fraying or irregular spacing is a warning sign.
- The badge button. The engraving should be sharp and even, not shallow or blotchy.
- Internal labels and season codes. Fonts, print sharpness and the season code all have to agree with the model, fabric and era.
- Garment-dye behaviour. Genuine garment dyeing is subtly uneven. A flat, factory-uniform colour on a garment-dyed item does not match.

The fabrics and special projects
The Stone Island range is described through its cloth and its special projects.
- Garment-dyed classics include the overshirts and field jackets the brand is known for.
- Coated and membrane fabrics are used in technical outerwear built around Osti’s fabric research.
- Shadow Project is the technical, forward-looking line developed with ACRONYM’s Errolson Hugh.
- Marina is the nautical-influenced strand within the brand.

Sizing and cut
Stone Island cuts differ by era and model, so the size on the label alone says little. For this reason every item is stated with flat measurements. Measuring a garment that already fits well and comparing it to the stated measurements shows how a new item will wear. The four measurements are chest, shoulders, length and sleeve.

Dating an item
The internal season code is a clear way to place a Stone Island item in time, alongside the evolution of the labels and badge. The framework below is a starting point, and the finer details should be confirmed against a trusted reference before a date is treated as certain.
| Where to look | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Season code on the internal label | The season and model: must match the fabric and colour |
| Label design and wording | Broad era, through changes in layout and typography |
| Badge construction | Consistency with the period and with the rest of the item |
Items worth knowing
Several Stone Island items stand out for their design and fabric: the garment-dyed overshirt, the coated or membrana jacket, the heavy-gauge knitwear and the classic hooded sweatshirt among them. The current selection is available for men and women, and the wider high-end selection is also available. The label Osti started first, in 1971, has its own collection: C.P. Company.
How to style it
Stone Island works best worn plainly: a garment-dyed overshirt over a tee and a coated jacket with straight trousers. The fabric and the badge already carry the look, so the rest of the outfit can stay quiet.
