Carhartt jackets are often associated first with the Detroit, the model that crossed from the job site into fashion.

It is not the jacket most likely to be available, though. In August 2026 the Active outnumbered it in the Carhartt stock almost two to one.

Which models are available

In August 2026 the Carhartt collection held 344 items, of which 152 were jackets. The table shows the jackets by model.

Model Items in stock
Active jacket 48
Detroit jacket 27
Chore coat 11
Vest 10
Bomber 8
Utility jacket 6

The Active is a general-purpose hooded work jacket. The Detroit is the more specific garment.

Because the stock holds more Active jackets than Detroit jackets, the Active offers more room to choose on colour, condition and measurements. Choosing a Detroit means choosing from fewer jackets.

The Active jacket

The Active is a hooded, zip-front work jacket, usually in duck canvas and usually lined. It is the workhorse of the range and the most straightforward model to wear.

The hood is the defining feature and the first point to check. On lined versions it adds bulk at the neck, which changes how the jacket sits under anything else. Some versions have a detachable hood.

The Active suits regular wear. Check the zip first, the hood lining second and the cuff ribbing third.

The Detroit jacket

The Detroit is shorter than the Active and has a collar instead of a hood, with a blanket or corduroy-collar construction depending on the version. It is the more considered-looking of the two.

Wear concentrates at the collar, the front zip and the corners of the pockets, so these are the places to check. The full breakdown of the model is in the Carhartt Detroit jacket guide, which covers versions, dating and what to look for.

The chore coat

The chore coat is the oldest silhouette in the range and has been in production in one form or another since 1917. It is longer than the Detroit, unlined or lightly lined, with patch pockets and a plain collar.

It behaves like a light overcoat more than like a work jacket, which makes it easy to wear outside a workwear wardrobe. In August 2026 the stock held 11 chore coats, fewer than Active jackets (48) and Detroit jackets (27).

Check the pocket corners and the button placket, which take the most stress.

Vests, bombers and the rest

Vests are sleeveless, with 10 in stock. They can be worn over a hoodie or a flannel shirt.

Bombers (8) and utility jackets (6) are the smallest groups. Naming across these models is less consistent than for the core models, so construction is a better guide than the name.

Choosing between the models

What is needed Look at
Regular wear with the widest choice Active jacket
A collared jacket Detroit jacket
A light overcoat Chore coat
A sleeveless layer Vest

The same three checks apply to all of them, in this order: the zip, the cuff ribbing and the seams at the pocket corners. Duck canvas tends to hold up, and the fittings and stress points are where wear shows first.

The zip, the cuff ribbing and the pocket corners are where a Carhartt jacket shows wear first.

Sizing across the models

All of them are cut to be worn over other clothing, and their sizing is inconsistent. In the August 2026 stock, jackets labelled large ran from 54 to 80 cm across the chest, a spread of 26 cm inside one letter.

The model is therefore a poor guide to size. The model can be chosen for what it is, and the individual jacket on its measurements. Chest, length, shoulders and sleeve measurements are stated for every jacket, and the reasoning is set out in the Carhartt Sizing Guide.

Current items

Current items are collected under Carhartt, with separate pages for men and women, and in the wider workwear and jackets collections.

A Carhartt WIP label indicates a different company, which is covered in the Carhartt WIP guide. Reading Carhartt Tags explains how to date an item, and the wider picture is in the Carhartt guide.
