What the Detroit jacket is
The Detroit jacket is a canvas work jacket from Carhartt with a corduroy collar and a blanket lining. This guide covers the history behind it, how it is built, how to read its tags, how to wear it and how to care for it.
History of the Carhartt Detroit jacket
Carhartt was founded in 1889 in Detroit, Michigan, by Hamilton Carhartt. The company first made bib overalls for railroad workers in heavy duck canvas and denim, with triple stitching and rivets at the stress points.
Construction and features
The Detroit jacket has a duck canvas shell, a corduroy collar and a blanket lining that is striped, plaid or checked depending on the item. It closes with a front zip and has a zipped chest pocket with the Carhartt logo patch and two angled welt pockets. Most Detroit jackets in the store also have adjustable tabs at the waist.
The details differ between items and between eras, so the description of each item states what that jacket has.
Reading the tags
On an older Detroit jacket, the tags are the first thing to check: the style code, the country of manufacture and the care label. A tag is evidence rather than proof, so the cloth, the stitching and the hardware are checked against what the tag suggests. Zips, rivets and buttons should feel solid and be cleanly finished.
The method is set out in full in reading Carhartt tags.
How to style a Carhartt Detroit jacket
Workwear look. Over a heavyweight hoodie or a flannel shirt, with straight-leg denim and work boots. Red Wing or Timberland boots suit it.
Streetwear look. Over a graphic T-shirt or a crewneck, with baggy jeans or cargo trousers and chunky trainers. Oversized proportions throughout the outfit suit the jacket.
Smarter look. Over a roll-neck jumper, with slim trousers and clean leather boots. The canvas holds its shape.
Sizing
The size label is a weaker guide than the measurements, because sizing differs between eras and between items. Each item is measured at four points: chest, length, shoulders and sleeve. Comparing those measurements with a jacket that already fits gives the most reliable result.
The method is covered in Carhartt sizing and cut and in the pit to pit guide to measuring clothing.
Caring for a Detroit jacket
Duck canvas is a heavy cotton, and the care label on the item has the final say. As general guidance, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low. Hot washes can shrink the canvas and damage the lining. Some owners re-wax the canvas with a beeswax-based product to restore water resistance.
