Spotting fake Arc'teryx: 7 things to check

Arc'teryx is known for technical shells with Gore-Tex membranes and clean seam construction. This guide sets out seven checks for judging an Arc'teryx item, from the bird logo to the cut.

1. The bird logo

The bird logo should be proportionate, not stretched or squashed, with clean edges and a well-defined beak. A logo that is close but not quite right at the edges or the beak is a reason to look closer.

2. Seam construction

On a technical shell, the inside of the seams is worth checking. The seams and the seam tape should be smooth, even and fully sealed. Visible stitching where it does not belong, uneven tape or seams that are not fully sealed are reasons to look closer.

3. Gore-Tex labelling

Garments with a Gore-Tex membrane carry a Gore-Tex label, often stating the membrane type, such as Gore-Tex Pro. The print should be sharp, and the membrane type should be plausible for the model. A missing or poorly printed Gore-Tex label on a jacket that claims the technology is a reason to look closer.

4. Zip quality and branding

Zips should run smoothly without snagging, and the pulls and sliders should be consistent with the model rather than generic.

5. Production codes and care labels

Interior labels should show clean, consistent printing, a consistent font and production codes in a consistent format. Blurred printing or inconsistent fonts are reasons to look closer.

6. Fabric feel and weight

The fabric should feel consistent with the type of shell. A hardshell should feel structured rather than soft or flimsy.

7. Overall cut and pattern

Arc'teryx shells are cut for movement and layering, with articulated elbows. A jacket that is cut noticeably boxier or looser than the known pattern for the model, at the stated size, is worth questioning.

Consistency across the checks

The seven checks work together. What counts is whether the construction, the labelling, the hardware and the fabric agree with each other and with the model of the item, rather than any single detail in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fake Arc'teryx be spotted from the logo alone?
No single detail is enough. The logo, the seams, the labels, the zips, the fabric and the cut should agree with each other and with the model.

Does the Gore-Tex label prove that an item is authentic?
Not on its own. A missing, blurred or inconsistent Gore-Tex label on a jacket that claims the technology is a reason to look closer.

Is every Arc'teryx item authenticated?
Every item is authenticated through LegitApp before it reaches the store.
