Pre-owned Burberry jackets, from Harrington and bomber jackets to quilted and field jackets, many with the Burberry check as lining. Each jacket is measured flat, and its condition is stated in the description.
Cloth and check lining
Thomas Burberry founded the house in 1856 and invented gabardine, a tightly woven and water-resistant cloth, in 1879, according to the company history. The jackets in this collection are made of other cloths. Most are cotton, polyester or wool, with some in nylon, corduroy, leather or suede.
Many jackets are lined with the Burberry check, which the house first used as a trench lining in the 1920s. In this collection the check appears mostly as lining and often shows at the collar when it is turned up.
Harrington jackets
The Harrington is the most common named model in the collection. It has a full zip, a pointed or stand collar and slanted welt pockets, and the check lining often shows at the neck. Most Harringtons are made of cotton, some of wool or corduroy, and a few are reversible.
Bomber, quilted and field jackets
The bomber jackets have a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem and a zip or button front, mostly in cotton or wool. The quilted jackets have a diamond-quilted outer, mostly in nylon or polyester, some with a corduroy collar and a few with a hood. The field jackets have flap pockets and a stand collar, some with a throat latch. Smaller groups are the coach jackets with a snap front and a handful of jackets in leather or suede.
Size and measurements
Most jackets in this collection are size M or L. The size on the label is only a rough guide, because jackets labelled L measure between 50 and 75 cm across the chest, a difference of 25 cm within one letter.
Each jacket is measured flat at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, the width across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve. Comparing those numbers with a jacket already in the wardrobe gives a more reliable result than the label. The method is explained step by step in the guide to measuring pit to pit.
The full range is available at Burberry, with separate pages for Harrington jackets, quilted jackets, trench coats and overcoats, and for men and women. The Burberry guide explains the labels, the lines and the history in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Harrington and a bomber jacket?
In this collection a Harrington typically has a full zip, a pointed or stand collar and a check lining that shows at the neck. A bomber jacket has a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem.
How can the age of a Burberry jacket be judged?
The label gives a first indication. Burberrys or Burberrys of London belongs to the years before 1999, when the company dropped the s from its name, and Burberry to 1999 or later.
What is the Burberry check?
The Burberry check is the pattern that the house first used as a trench lining in the 1920s. On the jackets in this collection it is found mostly in the lining.
How does Burberry sizing work?
Measurements differ widely within one size, so the four flat measurements in the description are a better guide than the label.
