Pre-owned Carhartt jackets in duck canvas and denim, from the hooded Active jacket to the Detroit jacket with its corduroy collar. Each jacket is measured flat, and its condition is stated in the description.

Work jackets in duck canvas

Carhartt made these jackets as work clothing, and the construction still shows it. Most jackets in this collection are cut from cotton duck canvas, a densely woven cotton that holds up to hard wear. The main seams are triple-stitched, the zips are heavy metal and the cuffs and hems are finished with rib knit or adjustable tabs. The lining differs per model and can be quilted, plaid flannel, blanket, fleece or sherpa.

Several jackets show signs of earlier use. Some have the embroidered name of a business on the chest or the back, and others have paint marks or canvas that has faded over the years. Wear of that kind is stated in the description of each jacket, together with its condition label.

The Active jacket

The Active jacket is the model that appears most often in this collection. It is a hooded work jacket with a full zip and rib-knit cuffs and hem, and many have a kangaroo pocket at the front. Many are made of duck canvas with a quilted lining. Versions in denim with a plaid flannel lining appear as well, as do jackets lined with fleece or sherpa. The colours range from black, blue and brown to beige, purple, red and orange.

The Detroit jacket

The Detroit jacket has a corduroy collar instead of a hood. It is lined with flannel or blanket and has a zipped chest pocket, angled welt pockets at the front and adjustable tabs that draw in the hem at the waist. Many Detroit jackets in this collection are made of washed canvas, which is softer and lighter in colour than unworn canvas.

Other models

Alongside the Active and the Detroit, the collection includes models that appear in smaller numbers. The Arctic, the Santa Fe and most Berwick jackets share the corduroy collar of the Detroit and have a quilted lining. The Sierra has a hood, as on the Active, with a fleece, sherpa or flannel lining, while the Muskegon is lined with fleece. The chore jacket and the Duster close with snaps or a zip over a quilted lining. The Aztec jackets are the exception, with a woven or embroidered Aztec pattern across the chest. Bombers, field jackets, utility jackets and a few parkas make up the rest of the collection.

Size and measurements

Carhartt cut its jackets generously through the chest, so they could be worn over a hoodie or a heavy shirt. The size on the label is therefore only a rough guide, and older jackets vary widely within a single size. In this collection, jackets labelled L measure between 54 and 80 cm across the chest, a difference of 26 cm within one letter. Sizes run from XS to XXXL.

Each jacket is measured flat at four points: across the chest from armpit to armpit, the length of the body, the width across the shoulders and the length of the sleeve. Comparing those numbers with a jacket already in the wardrobe gives a more reliable result than the label. Worn-in canvas is softer than new canvas and sits closer to the body, without measuring smaller. The method is explained step by step in the guide to measuring pit to pit, and the Carhartt sizing guide sets out what the measurements of this collection show.

How to read the label of a Carhartt jacket is explained in Reading Carhartt tags, the models are compared side by side in Carhartt jackets compared and the Detroit has its own guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Active jacket and the Detroit jacket?
The Active jacket has an attached hood, kangaroo pockets at the front and rib-knit cuffs and hem. The Detroit jacket has a corduroy collar instead of a hood, a flannel or blanket lining and adjustable tabs at the waist.

What is the difference between Carhartt and Carhartt WIP?
Carhartt is the original American workwear brand. Carhartt WIP is a separate European company that uses the name under licence, and it has its own collection in the store. The label inside the jacket shows which of the two made it.

How old are the jackets?
The age differs per jacket. Where the label gives a production date, it is stated in the description.

How does Carhartt sizing work?
Carhartt jackets are cut generously through the chest, to be worn over other layers. Measurements differ widely within one size, so the four measurements in the description are a better guide than the label.
