Patagonia: The Buying Guide
The name on a Patagonia label shows what kind of garment it is. This guide explains what Synchilla, Snap-T, Nano Puff and Torrentshell mean and what to check.
In this guide
Patagonia garments show a model name on the label, which makes the range easier to identify.
This guide covers what the names mean and what to check.
A short history
Patagonia was founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, a climber and blacksmith who had started by forging climbing hardware.
Synchilla was introduced in 1985. The name combines synthetic and chinchilla.
Model names
The names on a Patagonia label refer to product lines, which indicate what an item is made of and what it was designed for.
| Name | What it is | In stock, August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Synchilla | Synthetic fleece | 14 items |
| Snap-T | A pullover with a snap placket and chest pocket, usually in Synchilla | 9 items |
| Micro D | A lighter, thinner fleece | 6 items |
| Nano Puff | Synthetic insulation instead of fleece | 5 items |
| Adze | Softshell outer | 4 items |
| Torrentshell | Waterproof shell | 2 items |
| Regulator, R1 and R2 | Technical fleece lines | 4 items |
The name shows whether an item is a fleece, an insulated jacket or a waterproof shell, which decides how it should be judged.

Fleece in the Patagonia collection
In August 2026 the Patagonia collection held 89 items, of which 28 were fleece in one form or another, close to a third.
The main point to check on a fleece is pilling.
Judging a fleece. A hand run across the body and under the arms shows the surface. Light pilling is normal on an older garment. Heavy, matted pilling at the underarms and along the sides means the pile has broken down. The zip, the snap placket where there is one, and the elastic at the cuffs and hem come next.
The rest of the range
Beyond fleece, the collection includes 18 jackets, plus vests, shells, polo shirts and a small number of trousers. Two points apply to the non-fleece items.
Insulated jackets such as the Nano Puff are checked differently. Loss of loft shows as flat, thin panels where the insulation has migrated or compressed, and holding the garment to the light shows whether the insulation is evenly distributed.
Waterproof shells such as the Torrentshell are checked at the seams. The seam tape on the inside shows lifting or cracking, and a shell with failing tape no longer keeps out water at the seams. More on this in Gore-Tex, Down and DWR.
Colour
On a faded fleece, the sleeves should be compared with the body in natural light, because uneven fade is more visible on strong colours than on navy or black.
Order of checks
- The name on the label. It shows which category of garment is being judged.
- Pilling on any fleece, under the arms and along the sides first.
- Loft on any insulated item. Held to the light, the insulation should be evenly distributed.
- Seam tape on any waterproof item, inside, at the shoulders and the hood.
- Zips, snaps and elastic. These are the usual mechanical failure points.
- Measurements instead of the size label. Outdoor sizing assumes layers underneath.
Every item is authenticated through LegitApp before it reaches the store. Each item is then professionally cleaned, steamed, measured and photographed individually, and wear is shown in the photos and detailed in the description.
Sizing
Outdoor clothing is generally cut to be worn with layers underneath, so labelled sizes can run roomier than expected. A fleece intended as a mid-layer is cut closer than a fleece intended as an outer, and both may carry the same letter.
The reliable method is comparison with a garment that is already owned instead of trust in the label. The method is in the guide to measuring clothing.
Where to start
Among the named lines in the collection, Synchilla has the most items with 14, followed by Snap-T with 9 and Micro D with 6.
Current items are collected under Patagonia, with separate pages for men and women, and in the wider outdoor and jackets collections.
The category overview is in the outdoor gear guide, with other outdoor brands covered in the The North Face guide and the Canada Goose guide.
